Chapter 17

Isaac

Ahead of me, Kyra fell to her knees. Behind her, spurts of lava exploded into the morning sky. My arm burned. The deep gash from an Ordull fighter’s blade felt just as fresh as when she had swiped at me in the caves. Ignoring the blood dripping down my skin, I dashed to Kyra’s side, my anger flaring at Griffin for his obvious incompetence.

If I had been strong enough to complete the memory spell, then she’d already be erased from my life, and I wouldn’t have to worry anymore. But no matter the pain I had to suffer to get over her, our time together was too precious to forget.

“What happened to her?” I roared and knelt. “What’d you do, Griffin?”

“Shut up! Just move.”

A large crack split in the rocks to our left, threatening to divide our foundation. Kyra might survive the molten temperatures within, but not Griffin or me. He scooped Kyra up in his arms and pressed her against his bare chest. Why was he only half-dressed? Why were they soaked in water? Shit, I knew why. My Circle braced for the rush of emotions I wanted to bury deep.

“Isaac…” she whispered, her eyes groggy and half-opened. “Caspian…is….”

“It’s okay, it’ll be okay.” I reached forward to hold her hand. “We need to go into the caves.”

“No, I need to keep her near Ashes. She’ll protect Kyra.”

“No, listen to me.” I yanked his shoulder, the blood on my hand smearing his skin.

“Leave us alone so I can find a way to heal her. It’s the ₾sµwi. Obviously, the baptism ritual didn’t get rid of it, and whenever you’re around, she gets worse.”

“Wait for a goddess-damned minute and listen to me.” I jumped in front of Griffin. “You’re needed in the cave.”

“Nilson, get out of my fuckin’ way!”

“It’s Alaska.”

Griffin finally stopped and glared. “What about her?”

“She returned with three prisoners. But teleporting that many people sucked her dry. She’s dying, man.”

He regripped Kyra, and his lips pulled into a straight line before he said, “Take me to her.”

We jogged, ran, and sprinted between hot spots, dodging lava bursts and bubbling magma in every direction. Griffin kept my pace despite carrying one-hundred and thirty pounds of deadweight in his arms. Kyra was whimpering useless words to herself, and I had no idea if she was herself or overtaken by darkness again. If only I had a venti to fly over this horrid land.

Griffin murmured something to her under his breath. She had chosen him. It was a done deal now, and my only option was to move on. But how? How could a broken heart be repaired? It seemed impossible to glue back the pieces of my soul when they were scattered across Elidi like ashes.

Finally, we made it to the cave entrance, and Griffin halted. “What about the Ordull army?”

“Oniskel has them under her control. We had one fatality on our side, and they lost three. She’s holding them prisoners until we can decide what to do next.” The scrape on my arm accidentally rubbed up against the cave wall, making me hiss in pain.
